Strong rumors are now suggesting that Mazda is making real progress on a new RX7. It's an interesting situation: In an age where everyone is taking their sports cars upmarket (making them a LOT more expensive), and cars are getting heavier and more passenger oriented, Mazda has the opportunity to deliver a light weight high performance vehicle that could, in theory at least, be slotted below the IS-F, M3, GT-R, etc but above the Evo, STi, and 350Z in a lightweight, driver oriented, tuner friendly, package.
When might the car be unveiled? Sources suggest we might be looking at a new RX within two years, which means we may see it at the next Tokyo Motor Show (which will be held in 2009). In the mean time, we understand that the new RX7 will feature the updated 16X Renesis concept rotary engine, which is estimated to be more fuel efficient and powerful, with 20% more natural power vs the RX8's motor. Hopefully there will be more on tap for the new RX via turbocharging, but time will tell. As we learn more, we'll be passing it along...
