Starting today, Subaru has announced the preordering for their new USDM Impreza STi....
The new STi is available in hatch only and is powered by a 2.5L boxer 4 cylinder producing 305hp and 290lb ft of torque. Although the engine's torque peak is the same as before, it arrives 400 rpm earlier than it did before, coming in at 4,000rpm. The engine's power is transferred to the ground via a Driver Controlled Center Differential version of Subaru's Symmetrical AWD system, which is exclusive to the STi. The DCCD features three automatic modes as well as six manual differential locking settings. The AWD system also integrates a Vehicle Dynamics Control for stability and traction control, which also has thre driver selectable modes.
To keep the car on the ground the new STi features special suspension tuning and a stiffer platform from the usual WRX. To slow it down, the STi receives a full Brembo braking system. The wheels are BBS forged aluminum alloy 18x8.5" wearing Dunlop SP600 245/40R18 tires.
Now for some interesting bits:
-The new STi is only 22lbs heavier than the outgoing 2007 model... encouraging in a day where cars are getting a lot heavier with each subsequent generation.
-The car features a new incline start assist which momentarily prevents the vehicle from rolling backward when being driven off from a stop on an incline.
-For the first time the new STi features an optional navigation system, which besides integrating with the car's 6 disc CD changer, XM or Sirius satellite radio, and 10 speakers, will also connect to mp3 players as well as offer auxiliary video inputs from portable gaming devices.
The MSRP on the new STi has been set at $34,995. Preorders are currently being taken at Subaru's website, subaru.com.
Since Subaru didn't want to provide very good pics of the USDM model, here are some shots from the JDM car at Tokyo. (Also click here for prior coverage including additional shots) Sadly, the Recaros did not make it to the USDM version...
