^^thanks
JUST got in... noise you heard was godzilla landing back on the ground
tires went on, but not without some issues. mainly , they were HARD as hell to get on. i usually (really, only) go to kahn..esp for cars i care about (gtr, s2k, wifey car etc)... i took one tire+wheel down so he could see how it would work. after 30min-hr + his machine working at full + three man using all their force, the tire finally came off :eek3:
but some tricks were learned and by the end it only took a couple people to do it...
wear patterns look consistent with too much toe more than anything else. i will review the results with nissan when i send the car up in a couple months. and at that time it looks like im going to go a little more conservative on the toe, but will stay within the race spec alignment. camber seems ok.
tonight i might break them in but ill probably rest and do it tomorrow. will wash the car down tomorrow too. so glad to be back on the road with it...
pics coming ...

ok now that ive gotten some rest,, picture time

one of the new tires getting rolled out for transport to the shop
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/tekknikal/GT-R/IMG_1063.jpg
a wheel, tire and replacement, on their way to the shop
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/tekknikal/GT-R/IMG_1067.jpg
kahn going straight to work, deflating the old tires and at the same time safely dismounting the tire pressure sensor (tpms) ... if you have a car with tpms installed its very important to have it dismounted when the tire gets deflated. if you dont, you can damage (destroy) the sensors when the tire itself gets dismounted.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/tekknikal/GT-R/IMG_1076.jpg
a difficult step: once the tire is deflated you have to get the sidewall to pop up over the edge of the wheel. on tires like these its hard to do because the tires were designed to never leave the wheel. so, among other things the sidewalls are stiff, thick and are reinforced. thats how you can drive on them with zero pressure. but it makes this step difficult. at the end of the day, some clever use of tools + half a dozen hands seemed to do the trick...
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/tekknikal/GT-R/IMG_1078.jpg
early on in the development of the gtr, some of project management wondered why the team wanted to use runflats, if it wasnt a waste of money. to prove the point, the team drilled holes in each tire and took one of executives who held such an opinion out for some hot laps.
above = the bottom of the tire is getting pulled over the wheel. it's not a cakewalk, but far easier than getting the first sidewall over the rim.

all of the oem tires that went into production for the gtr are runflat. dunlop all season, bridgestone snow, bridgestone summer, and dunlop summer. above = two of the old potenzas. although one looks smaller than 20", its only an illusion. they're both really the same diameter.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/tekknikal/GT-R/IMG_1079.jpg
the inside of the top of the wheel. the little grooves run around the wheel and actually mate to a similar design put into the lip of the tires. this is done so that when the tires are inflated they lock onto the wheel and won't slip. this prevents the tire from slipping on the wheel under extreme conditions (track use). it also means that once the tire is mounted, you can't turn it. so, you have to line up your yellow dot close to the tpms valve stem before you inflate.
http://i137.photobucket.com/albums/q218/tekknikal/GT-R/IMG_1084.jpg
the bottom of the wheel, same feature. some drag wheels/slicks are setup so you put in screws. this is actually the same concept.

nissan strongly suggests that any gtr tire that gets dismounted be discarded. technically, you cant dismount a tire even to fix a flat. most tire shops are skeptical on that and think the suggestion might really be to just have people buy more tires. on the flip side, if under warranty tires need to be changed- the dealer will buy new ones instead of dismounting the old ones, and will do so at nissan's cost. nissan says the force used to dismount these tires is so great, the tires would be damaged.
for what its worth, nissan also warned, in 2007, that some may have to cut their tires off their wheels. luckily, that didn't turn out to be the case today.
well thats the end of the walk through....
tomorrow morning is break in

lol ... nah these tires came in through the post office.. maybe if you saw tires that look like this they were 17s for an sti? :dunno: the tread looks the same. the compound is different and they arent runflat... but if you just see the tread pattern from a distance it would look the same
for tire life yes it was real short.. i think part of it is the track alignment, part of it is the roads, some is how the alignment has changed a little with driving.. but most of it is probably my driving.
the funny thing is, i hear that im afraid of the car and dont ever really drive it :stickpoke:
anyway, i feel you on the buying rims w/ each tire change  i feel the same way....

I'm pretty sure that buying 4 oem rims is equivalent to buying a used car.:crazy:lol

gave the wapa guys a demo display to about 100 lol.. short shifting ..didnt want to exceed 1/2g,,, so far so good. tires smell really funny but seem to be griping well. by next week ill be at 100% for sure, if not later today...

so in a thread on nagtroc, they were talking about Gs pulled. some of the guys that track were posting their numbers.. 1.75G (on r compound).. another said his passenger saw 1.50G on the street. i think the 1.50G was on r compound.. not sure.. but either way, damn. that's a lot... thought i was doing pretty good playing around at 1.0, i have quite a ways to go  we'll see what these tires can do. hope to be fully broken in by next weekend :fingersx:

update
tirerack says 500mi to break in :ugh: dont know how true that is for tires like these :dunno:
we're at +100mi now, 0.7G is holding good, could feel better but im also running too many psi by 10-20%
will see how it goes by weekend. will probably make a few runs and drop the pressures slowly between runs and see how it feels
also tomorrow will be ordering another goodie... for the car.. cant wait
after that, will be ordering some tools....
