It's out. You'll be seeing it on the streets very soon- Mitsubishi's all new 2008 Lancer:

Not to be confused with the upcoming Evolution X (covered here), the car is completely revised from the last Lancer. It's received a new engine, now called the B11, an all aluminum 2.0L 4cyl MIVEC equipped engine with 152hp/146lb-ft. Transmission are either a CVT automatic with paddle shifting (although it doesn't use traditional gears- when you floor it in 'auto mode' the tach just goes to redline and stays there!) or manual. The new car is wider than before and its chassis has been stiffened further. The suspension geometry this time around comes from the Evolution, and Mitsu fans will be pleased to know that even the non-evo Lancer has been tested on the famous 'ring.

On the inside, the interior has been redone with higher grade materials used throughout. Sounds are provided by a Rockford Fosgate built 650 Watt sound system which features a 6cd changer and in the states a 30gb navigation system. Mitsubishi is proud to note that the system is iPod compatible and when parked, will even display iPod videos.

On the safety side, a number of key boxes are ticked- the car features airbags throughout- even for your knees. The chassis is better designed for collisions and stability, and the car features ABS and electronic brake force distribution. The car is also friendly toward others- with crumple zones built in for unfortunate pedestrians. Environmentally, the car achieves 22/29mpg with the CVT- and 21/29mpg with the stick. All in all then, it's a capable car.

A lot of people are probably looking for the Ralliart version. Well, we have little news on that front. Apparently, the car will be coming after the Evolution X, which probably means its at least a year off still. The good news though, is that Mitsubishi is apparently seriously targeting the Subaru WRX with it, and the car is currently undergoing extensive testing not just on roads, but also on tracks.

How does the new Lancer compare to the Corolla, Sentra, and Civic? Time will tell. The price is competitive- it starts at $13,990 stateside. And if all the engineering and tuning turns out to be as good as claimed, the car could be a bargain and a great platform for Mitsubishi to compete with in the compact segment.
